Interview with Pete Hines about Fallout 3
2009-09-28, Aplankė: 6701

Pete Hines is currently the "Bethesda Softworks" Vice President in charge of public relations and marketing. It can be argued that he is one of the three most influential employees of this company and that this man can tell most about "Fallout 3". We had a great opportunity and we, of course, asked him a bunch of questions.

How Bethesda devise to buy Fallout franchise and take the development of Fallout 3? Do this action have some kind of a serious reason?

We were looking to start working on a second project with the Bethesda Game Studios team. At the time they were already in development on The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Basically we said if we could do anything, it'd be great to do Fallout, and so we pursued that license and acquired it and began development on it. It just seemed like a really good fit for the team and the kind of games we like to make.

Maybe Bethesda have some sort of surprises prepared for Fallout 3 game? Why for such a successful game Bethesda created only five DLC? Maybe you're going to release some smaller game modifications?

Well, five DLCs of that size is a lot more than pretty much anyone else puts out. It’s an awful lot of time and effort that went into making those. At a certain point you do feel like you need to move on and get people working on other projects and so we felt like with those five that we had provided a lot of new content and new things to do, and it was time to move the people making that DLC on to other things.

Is Fallout 3 developers team including you, test some game fans made modifications? Maybe you have some tips for game fans, who develops this game modifications?

We do play and look at the mods and plugins. There’s so many you could never play them all. One of the things we really like is that there is a really well established mod community for The Elder Scrolls, with people who have spent a LOT of time making mods and plugins and using our tools. So to see them pitching in to help out folks just getting into modding with Fallout 3 has been terrific. It’s a really great community and very cool to see the more experienced folks helping out others.

As far as tips? If you’re new to it, usually folks try to bite off more than they can chew at first. I think trying little things to figure out how things work is a good approach, and then build on that as far as scope and depth of whatever it is you’re doing. Most importantly, do what you enjoy and have fun doing it.

How much people worked on Fallout 3 development?

Well the team is different sizes at various points of development. At its height thedevelopment team was probably around 85 or so, but when you add all the folks from QA that are testing the game on a daily basis and providing feedback, that number is over 100.

I want to ask about this photo:

Can you tell more about this? This is some kind of Vault imitation? If so, this is for game developers team, that they have Fallout 3 atmosphere than they develop game?

This is actually just a picture we took of the team with their Fallout 3 t-shirts on. We took a pic of them walking down one of the loading docks in the building here at work to make it look like a bunch of people walking into the Vault.

So Bethesda announced "Fallout: New Vegas". Is this game will be similar to Fallout 3? What can we expect from him?

You’ll have to wait and see what we have planned with the folks at Obsidian. We aren’t ready to talk about Fallout New Vegas yet.

Why are the most interesting parts of the game ( Fallout 3 ) was so little? I am talking about the hero's childhood. I do not remember any game where you could possibly be a baby and in the fallout it was super. Only a lamentably short. We want some more! :)

Well, we figured most people were going to want to get going into the world and doing whatever they wanted. So we tried to strike a balance between giving you a sense of place in the Vault. Giving you an idea of what it would be like growing up there, and using that time to help teach you some of the basic ideas in the game. But at the same time we try to keep it moving because the heart of the game is leaving there and going out into this destroyed wasteland and making your own way, deciding how you want to play the game.

I want to ask about hero's father - James. At the game beginning player see him for very short time. Than father ran of the Vault 101. After that player found him and soon he's dead. Why is it so? Why are no more choices in this situation which don't let James to die ?

Well, not everything that happens in life is your choice. James made a choice to leave you behind in order to go back to this project and try to finish it and bring people clean water. You also have choices. You can choose not to go looking for your father. You can decide how it is you interact with him when you find him, but it’s still his choice to do what he did.

About G.E.C.K. - game modifications developing application. Will Bethesda release some more patchs for it? For now it still have some serious bugs.

I don’t know if we’ll be making any additional changes to the G.E.C.K. or not at this point.
